  • Dinner Meeting: Materials for Plugging and Abandonment - Past and Future

    SPE Oslo February 2019 Speaker : Arild Saasen  Abstract: The subject of his presentation is materials for permanent plugging and abandonment of wells. His presentation includes materials that has been applied throughout the last decades and materials that is being focus area in R&D projects at the moment. He will cover both field experience and large scale experimental results. In the presentation he will also describe materials used in the old pyramids and applications used towards atomic weapons, the focus however is towards materials more common for usage in current plug and abandonment techniques. Speaker Bio:  Arild Saasen works as a professor in Petroleum Engineering at University of Stavanger and as a Senior Advisor for PRORES FM AS, JAGTECH AS and for Alkas Atlantic AS. He has more than 30 years’ experience in the petroleum industry. Previously, he has had the positions as Technology Advisor for Det Norske Oljeselskap ASA (now named AkerBP), a specialist in drilling and well fluid technology for Statoil (now named Equinor) and research scientist for Rogalandsforskning (now named NORCE). He has published or co-authored more than 270 scientific and technical papers; around one third of them being SPE papers and publications. His education includes a MSc in applied mathematics from the University of Oslo, and a PhD in rheology from the Technical University of Denmark, Lyngby. He has been awarded two international awards: The Carl Klason Rheology award in 2012, and the SPE North Sea Region Drilling Engineering Award in 2018. He has also acted as an SPE Distinguished Lecturer in the term 2014-15. Currently, he is an associated editor of the SPE Journal.
